Our Elevator Pitch

One of the first things we’re working on the in the TechStars program is our elevator pitch: both improving the content and the delivery. In the first two days, we’ve been asked to present it to three different mentors and all of the pitches have improved dramatically.

Here’s our latest version (it’s sure to change):

“Devver provides web-based tools that allow developers to easily understand and improve their code. Our tools analyze and recommend changes to code with almost zero setup costs for the developer. For example, using Devver, developers can quickly and easily analyze the performance, complexity, and compatibility of their project, saving them time and money.”

    Dense, but somehow I can’t grasp what you are saying… and I have a background building development tools!!!

    May I suggest you hone this to emphasize your most important feature? For example, you start out by saying “web-based.” One possibility is that you make tools that are similar to existing tools, but yours work over the web, which confers certain benefits that the existing tools do not.

    Another possibility is that your tools recommend changes while othe rtools merely collect information. Again, that might be one important feature. If that is the cae, I would drop “web-based” and use the space to explain exactly why recommending changes is crucial. Or perhaps analyzing performance, complexity AND compatibility is what is important… existing tools might only do two out of three. Again, if that’s the key point I would lead with it and stay with it.

    I’m not an expert in elevator pitches, so perhaps I am wrong. But for my 2c, I would like the same number of words, but all saying one thing and using the extra space to justify it or be more specific about it.

  2. Great advice. As you noticed, our pitch is pretty vague right now – hopefully, that will change as the product matures and we start to identify a specific set of tools rather than just a vision. Right now, we just have some early code but a lot of ideas about what services we can provide that will make life better for Ruby developers.

    My current thinking is that our biggest feature is the fact our tools are “web-based” – because they are not run on the developer’s machine, but rather on our servers, we can provide interesting results to the developer much more quickly. However, if you ask me again in two weeks, my answer may be different…
